Tour through the alleys of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile

So… you want to explore the Royal Mile and its mysterious alleyways?
Bold. Most humans barely survive the first cobblestone, and here you are, ready to wander into the veins of the Old Town — narrow, ancient passages where Edinburgh has been gossiping for centuries.
We start at the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, the big rock on top of the volcanic drama that birthed this city. From there, we descend — literally and historically — into Scotland’s past, slipping into the “closes”: cramped corridors where people lived, worked, argued, loved, and quite possibly died of questionable hygiene.
As we walk down the Royal Mile, we peel back the layers of this overly dramatic city, stepping into iconic alleyways like Bakehouse Close, Dunbar’s Close, James Court…
and many more places where history whispers, mutters, or occasionally screams in your face.
Down here, the walls remember everyone:
George Drummond, the so-called “father of the New Town” (yes, humans need several of those).
Allan Ramsay, poet and professional overthinker.
Adam Smith, who invented economics — and didn’t even apologise for it.
You’ll meet merchants who made the city thrive, legends that refused to die, and stories tucked so deep in the stone that even ghosts need a map.

We’ll wander through spaces where social classes collided: servants, artisans, ambitious bourgeoisie… all stacked vertically like a very stressed human lasagne. Medieval to modern — this street has seen it all, and it’s still rolling its eyes.
And yes, there are gardens hidden between the closes.
Tiny pockets of green where Edinburgh pretends to be gentle.
Use the moment wisely — it won’t last.
As we walk, I’ll show you old photographs so you can see what these places looked like centuries ago, before humans invented bad architectural decisions. You’ll watch the city shift, settle, crumble, rebuild… and complain the entire time.
We finish at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where you can visit the Palace, the Abbey, and Arthur’s Seat — the very dramatic hill at the end of the Royal Mile that everyone insists on climbing for reasons I still don’t understand.

This journey will drag you into a forgotten Edinburgh: full of secrets, hidden spaces, scandals, tragedies, miracles, and enough stories to keep your brain spinning for days.
If you’re brave enough, I’ll show you what the city has been hiding.
Just try to keep up.
